Comic science fiction or comedy science fiction is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy which replaces the science-fiction (SF) genre conventions for comedic impact. Comic science fiction frequently mocks or satirizes SF conventions that are standard – such as invasion of Earth, interstellar travel, or technology that is autonomous. It can satirize and criticize society that is present day.
A historical example was the Pete Manx show by Henry Kuttner and Arthur K. Barnes (occasionally writing together and sometimes separately, beneath the home pen-name of Kelvin Kent). The show featured a carnival barker who utilizes his skills to escape trouble. Two after show cemented Kuttner’s standing among the most common early authors of comic science fiction: the Gallegher series (roughly a budding inventor as well as his inaugural robot) along with the Hogben series (roughly a family of mutant hillbillies). The former appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1943 and 1948 and has been gathered in hardcover as Robots don’t have any Tails (Gnome, 1952), and the latter appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories from the late 1940s. From the 1950s comedy became prevalent in science fiction. A Few of the writers contributing comprised: Alfred Bester, Harry Harrison, C.M. Kornbluth, Frederik Pohl, and Robert Sheckley.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a comic science-fiction series written by Douglas Adams. Initially a radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4 it morphed such as stage shows, books, comic books, a 1981 TV series, a 1984 computer game, and 2005 feature film.
